Renting a Car in Turkey – What Every Visitor to Antalya Should Know

Turkey has its own set of rules, conventions and practical considerations that differ meaningfully from car hire in Western Europe or North America. For first-time visitors to Antalya — and for returning travellers who have always relied on transfers and taxis — understanding these in advance removes uncertainty and allows you to focus on the driving itself, which in this region is genuinely rewarding.

The following covers everything a visitor needs to know before hiring a car in Antalya: licences, insurance, roads, tolls, fuel, parking and the practicalities that do not appear in the booking confirmation.

What Driving Licence Do I Need?

A valid driving licence issued in your country of residence is accepted for car hire in Turkey. The licence must have been held for at least one year. For EU licence holders, no additional documentation is required.

Non-EU licence holders — including travellers from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada and most other countries outside the European Union — are advised to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their domestic licence. An IDP is not a strict legal requirement for all nationalities, but it is recommended and can prevent complications during police checks on rural roads where an unfamiliar licence format may cause confusion. IDPs are inexpensive and available from motoring associations in most countries before you travel.

Your passport or national ID card must be presented alongside your driving licence at the point of vehicle collection.

Do I Need a Credit Card?

With most franchise car hire companies operating at Antalya Airport, yes. A credit card is typically required to hold a security deposit ranging from €200 to €1,000.

Antalya Car Hire operates differently. No credit card is required and no security deposit is held. Payment is made by cash or debit card on delivery of the vehicle. This applies to every vehicle in our fleet without exception.

What Insurance Is Included?

Turkish law requires all hire vehicles to carry third party liability insurance, which covers damage caused to other vehicles and property in the event of an accident. This is included as standard with every hire.

Antalya Car Hire also includes full CASCO insurance — comprehensive cover for damage to the hire vehicle itself — with zero franchise on every booking. This means your financial liability in the event of an accident is nil, regardless of fault. No excess waiver product needs to be purchased separately.

How Do Tolls Work in Turkey?

Turkish motorways and several major bridges operate a fully electronic toll system called HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi). There are no cash toll booths on HGS-equipped roads — vehicles pass through at normal speed and the toll is recorded electronically against the vehicle’s registered tag.

Your Antalya Car Hire vehicle will already have an active HGS tag fitted. Toll charges incurred during your hire period are invoiced separately at the actual rate charged by the highway authority — there is no markup and no administration fee applied. The D400 coastal highway between Antalya and Alanya does not currently operate toll sections, so most day trips from the resort zones involve no toll charges at all. Tolls become relevant primarily if you are driving northwest toward Burdur, Pamukkale or Istanbul.

What Are the Speed Limits?

Speed limits in Turkey are enforced by a dense network of fixed radar cameras, particularly on the D400 corridor and on approach roads to major cities. The limits are:

50 km/h in urban and built-up areas. 90 km/h on single-lane national roads. 110 km/h on dual carriageways. 120 km/h on motorways.

Fines for speeding are applied at the registered address of the vehicle and will be passed to the hirer. Driving within the limits is straightforward — Turkish roads are well-signposted and the camera locations are not hidden.

What Is the Fuel Situation?

Turkey uses the same fuel grades as Western Europe — 95 octane petrol (benzin), diesel (motorin) and LPG. Petrol stations are frequent on all major routes out of Antalya and most accept debit card payment. Fuel prices in Turkey are among the higher end in the region due to taxation, so filling up before longer excursions is advisable rather than relying on stations in smaller villages.

All Antalya Car Hire vehicles are delivered with a full tank and should be returned full. There are no fuel surcharges and no partial tank policies.

What Is Driving Like in Antalya?

Antalya city centre traffic is dense during morning and evening peak hours, as it is in any major city. Outside peak hours and outside the city itself, driving across the Antalya region is relaxed and straightforward. The D400 coastal highway — the main artery connecting Antalya to Belek, Side and Alanya to the east, and to Kemer and Kaş to the west — is a well-maintained dual carriageway for most of its length through the region.

Mountain roads into the Taurus — toward Köprülü Canyon, Saklikent Gorge or the Bey Mountains — narrow considerably and require more attention. They are entirely driveable in standard hire vehicles but benefit from an early start to avoid the small amount of oncoming traffic that uses the same roads.

Roundabouts in Turkey operate on the same give-way-to-the-right principle as most of Europe. Traffic lights are standard. Parking in resort zones along Lara, Kundu and Belek is generally uncomplicated. The old city of Antalya — Kaleiçi — is the one area where parking requires patience; dedicated car parks on the perimeter are the practical solution.
